Abstract

Water-soluble disalts of 1,2-sulphonic-sulphinic acids, said salts having amine, ammonium, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or magnesium cations, are prepared by adding an aqueous solution of a bisulphite salt containing from 1 to 2.5 mols. of bisulphite ion per mol. of olefin to one, or a mixture, of C10-C20 normal terminal olefins in the presence of an alcohol solvent and from 0.001 to 0.10 mol. of a peroxy-containing initiator per mol. of olefin at a pH of 3.5 to 6.5, and maintaining said pH while removing the alcohol from the mixture and recovering the desired product. Preferred feedstock is a mixture of primary olefins such as that obtained by cracking petroleum waxes and it is desirable to subject the olefin(s) to mild acid treatment or passage through an adsorbent material, e.g. silica gel, prior to the reaction. The bisulphite ion may be provided as an amine, ammonium, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or magnesium bisulphite or may be generated in situ from SO2 and alkali. The alcohol solvent, which may be anhydrous or aqueous, is preferably a C1 to C6 monohydric alcohol and the reaction temperatures can vary from 20 DEG to 200 DEG C. The products of the invention have detergent properties (see Division C5).ALSO:Water-soluble disalts of C10-C20 normal alkyl 1,2-sulphonic-sulphinic acids, said salts having amine, ammonium, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or magnesium cations, are stated to have detergent properties and can be formed into detergent bars.
