Abstract

Powdered fumaric and/or adipic acids are rendered free flowing by admixing with either (a) an alkali metal salt of a dialkyl sulphosuccinate (alkyl with 7-11C.) or (b) said salt or other surfactant in association with a flow conditioning agent. Specified sulphosuccinates are di-(2-ethyl hexyl, n-heptyl or n-octyl), sodium sulphosuccinates, mono-2-ethyl-hexyl, mono-1-methyl-4-ethyl hexyl, sodium sulphosuccinate, di-(1-methyl-4-ethyl octyl), di-(1-methyl hexyl), di-(1-butyl amyl), di(iso-butyl-3-methyl butyl) and di-(-1-methyl-4-ethyl hexyl)-sec sodium sulphosuccinates; surfactants, are dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate, benzyl ether of octyl phenol, and long chain fatty acid esters of a polyoxyethylene hexitol anhydride derived from sorbitol; and flow-conditioning agents are tricalcium phosphate, silica aerogel, calcium silicate, sodium aluminium silicate and sodium benzoate. The acids may be milled with the additives or mixed or tumbled therewith or sprayed on the dry crystalline acid in the form of a solution, for example in acetone, and which may then be dried and powdered. A preferred preparation of from 0.1% to 1% of surfactant is used and the products may be used in carbonated beverages, wines, dry beverage concentrates or beers.ALSO:A free-flowing, readily soluble acidulating composition for carbonated beverages, wines, dry beverage concentrates and beer, comprises powdered fumaric and/or adipic acid in admixture with an alkali metal salt of a dialkyl sulphosuccinate of which each alkyl group contains 7-11 carbon atoms, or the said alkali metal salt of a dialkyl sulphosuccinate or other surfactant in association with a flow conditioning agent. Particularly mentioned are the di-(2-ethyl hexyl, n-heptyl or n-octyl) sodium sulphosuccinates, mono-2-ethyl hexyl, mono-1-methyl-4-ethyl hexyl sodium sulphosuccinate, mono-2-ethyl hexyl, mono-1-methyl heptyl sodium sulphosuccinate, and di-(1-methyl-4-ethyl octyl), di-(1-methyl hexyl), di-(1-butyl amyl), di(iso butyl-3-methyl butyl) and di-(1-methyl-4-ethyl hexyl)-sec sodium sulphosuccinates. Specified surfactants to be employed in association with a flow conditioning agent are: dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate, the benzyl ether of octyl phenol, and long chain fatty acid esters of a polyoxyethylene derivative of a hexitol anhydride derived from sorbitol, such as polyoxyethylene sorbitan stearate. Flow conditioning agents mentioned are: tricalcium phosphate, silica aerogel, calcium silicate, sodium aluminium silicate and sodium benzoate. The fumaric and/or adipic acid may be milled with the sulphosuccinate. Solid crystalline fumaric and/or adipic acid may be coated with between 0.1 and 1.0% of the sulphosuccinate by spraying it on the acid either in molten form or in a solvent such as water, acetone or ethyl alcohol; the solvent (if any) is subsequently evaporated off and the coated particles are milled to a fine powder. Alternatively finely powdered fumaric and/or adipic acid is coated with between 0.1 and 1.0% by weight of the surfactant and the flow conditioning agent is dispersed through the coated particles in proportions between 0.2 and 5.0% by weight of the total composition. Examples are described.
