[Also in Division B1] A crystallizer for low-grade massecuites has a container 27 with a masher and stirrer comprising tubular helical coils 11 arranged in opposite pairs along a rotatable hollow shaft 10, successive pairs being displaced round the shaft to form a star pattern in end view, Fig. 2. Each coil is supported by a frame 12 having pockets 20 for distributing the crystals. As shown in Fig. 5, twelve coils are connected in three sections 24, 25, 26, each of four coils, the inlet end of each section being shown at 13, 14, 15 and the outlet ends being connected to the interior 18 of the hollow shaft 10 and thence to discharge pipe 19. Heating medium is supplied to a chamber 17 in the shaft whence it is distributed in the course of each revolution successively to inlets 13, 14, 15 by a rotary valve consisting of an apertured disc which is weighted to maintain a constant position and rotates on the pipe 19 in contact with partition 16 (see also Fig. 4, not shown). The preferred heating medium is water and the temperature is adjusted by valves 36, 38 (see Fig. 8, not shown) which operate in opposite directions and are actuated by capillary feelers which sense the temperature of the sugar mass. The medium may be supplied under low pressure and the rotation of the coils causes flow through them to be assisted by gravity. Formation of a dissolving layer on the surface of the sugar mass is prevented by distributing the molten syrup through a tube 29 to supply chambers 28 discharging below the level of the sugar mass in the container 27 and heated by steam in a jacket 31.
