Abstract

The invention comprises the chromium and cobalt complexes of monoazo compounds of formula <FORM:0970120/C4-C5/1> wherein R is an o-phenylene radical, n is 0 or 1 and Z is an acyl radical which contains a reactive group i.e. a group capable of reaction with the hydroxyl groups of cellulose fibre to form a covalent bond. The dyes are prepared by treating a suitable aminoazo dye with a chromium or cobalt-yielding agent and with the acid halide or anhydride of an acid which contains a group as defined above. Preferably the metallization precedes the acylation reaction. Specified acylating agents include the halides and anhydrides of acrylic, a -chloroacrylic, propiolic, maleic mono- and di-chloromaleic, chloroacetic, b -chloro- or -bromo-propionic and a :b -dichloropropionic acids; halotriazines and halopyrimidines. Halogen atoms on the triazine and pyrimidine rings may be replaced by further reaction with amines, phenols, alcohols and mercapto compounds to give substituents which may be reactive as defined above.
