A perforated or magnetic tape 11 is sensed twice at 12 and 13, for example by photo-cells or contact brushes, the output from sensing station 12 is delayed in a store 24 so that the signals occurring at any instant on leads 19-23 and 25-29 should correspond. Since, if a reading error occurs, it is more likely that a hole will be read as a space rather than vice versa, OR gates 31-35 provide a corrected output in which "hole" is assumed whenever the corresponding outputs of sensing stations 12,13 differ. Exclusive OR gates 41, 42 and 43, 44 &c. provide -outputs when one of stations 12,13 makes an error, i.e. when that station reads "space" and the other other station reads "hole". Gates 41, 43 &c. and 42, 44 &c. may be connected to individual counters to register the number of errors made by each station 12,13, an alarm being signalled if the number of errors reaches a predetermined level.
