The tunnelling machine of the parent Specification, which is referred to, is modified in thai the annular gear ring 30 and drive pinions 31 for rotating the boring head are so designed that each pinion 31 rotates about an axis parallel to the rotational axis of the head instead of about an axis at right angles thereto as in the parent Specification. Each pinion 31 is mounted on the output shaft of either a reduction gear 33 driven through clutch means 35, 37 from a motor 36 or a variable speed hydraulic motor.
