Abstract

969,941. Surgical optical instruments. T. B. CLERK. (American Optical Co.). Oct. 17, 1962, No. 39353/62. Heading ASR. [Also in Division G2] A device for examining specimens, in particular of blood, comprising an elongated relatively thin fibre optical probe 10 (see Fig. 1), having a cross-section of such a size that the probe could be inserted into a blood vessel 28, the fibres being optically insulated from each other, and at one end of the probe the fibres are separated into two groups 20, 21 so that light can be passed down one of the groups 21 into the blood vessel and can be passed back up the other group 20, the other end of the probe having a thin-walled casing 11. In the embodiment shown, the casing is a hypardermic needle but in other embodiments it is a rubber tube and in Fig. 9 it is a plastic casing. The two groups of fibres when joined together may be placed side-by-side or coaxially relative to each other, the two being separated by insulating material, along at least part of their length. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 9 the light passes down tube 46, is reflected at mirror surface 49, 50, passes through a specimen of blood 51 flowing through a gap in the fibres and up through tube 47. In the colorimeter shown in Fig. 1, light from a source 12 is passed through filter 15 or filter 16, mounted on a slidable base 31, according to the required wavelength band, passes into the blood 29 as described above and is transmitted back to a photo-electric device 18 which measures the intensity of light falling on it. The blood comprises oxyhemoglobin and reduced hemoglobin which two components transmit different proportions of light at different wavelengths. Therefore by obtaining a reading from instrument 18 when the wavelength of light is such that both the blood component transmits it equally and another reading from the instrument 18 when the wavelength of light is such that the two components transmit by previously determined unequal amounts and comparing the two readings the oxygen saturation of the blood can be determined. In another embodiment the photoelectric device may be replaced by a magnifying piece. Specification 576,205 is referred to.
