Abstract

969,741. Blood test separating devices. J. H. BREWER. June 6, 1963, No. 22620/63. Heading B1X. A device for separating solid components from small blood samples comprises a member having in one surface thereof a recess comprising intercommunicating principal and auxiliary portions, the former of which contains a precipitating agent. Fig. 6 shows a sheet 10 in the form of a card or slide having a principal recess portion 12 communicating with the auxiliary recess portion to the right thereof. The sheet is packed in an aluminium foil envelope lined with polyethylene, polypropylene or polyvinyl chloride, together with a disposable lancet 22, similarly packed, a stirring rod 23 and a wire loop 24 (or a capillary pipette) for removing liquid from the recess. In use, two or three drops of blood are placed in the principal recess portion 12, stirred with the reagent to effect precipitation, and the sheet is then folded at 16 with end 17 downwardly pointing, and placed on a horizontal surface to drain liquid serum or plasma into the auxiliary portion for removal to be tested. The sheet may be made of polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene or polyvinyl plastic having an inert plasticizer, or of casein sized paperboard coated with polyethylene. The precipitating agent may be mixed with normal saline, coated on the bottom of the principal portion and allowed to dry. The agent may contain a hemagglutinin (e.g. phytohemagglutinin or one produced immunologically) and (for serum) a coagulant such as thrombin or (for plasma) an anticoagulant such as heparin, dicumarol, sod. citrate, potassium, ammonium, lithium or sodium onalate, or ethylene diaminotetraacetate. Alternatively to the use of a coagulant, the sample may be stirred. Details of dimensions and quantities are provided.
