Abstract

C3- 10 1,2-alkylene oxides are isomerized to aldehydes, ketones and alcohols by passing their vapours through powdered tri-lithium orthophosphate in a liquid chemically inert to the phosphate, the oxide and the isomer, and which is maintained at the isomerization temperature; e.g. 180 DEG -400 DEG C. Examples describe the isomerization of propylene oxide to allyl alcohols. Specified inert liquids are aromatic, cycloaliphatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons of molecular weight above 120, and aryl oxides, numerous examples being given.
