In an electro-mechanical data storage equipment flat record members are arranged side by side and each carries a number of parallel tracks of information and means are provided to move a reading head carriage into position to select the desired record, the moving means being adapted to produce a pattern of signals which is compared with the input control pattern to provide an automatic check on its proper operation. The reading head carriage is moved by a series of pistons having strokes in proportion to 1, 2, 4, 8 &c. Each piston is adapted to operate contacts at the opposite ends of its travel. The control signals are applied to relays, one set of contacts being connected to control valves to allow pressure to pass to selected ones of the pistons. At the end of the movement a comparison is made between the positions of the pistons and the positions of the relays. For this purpose the contacts of the pis- tons and the relays are interconnected and identity provides a path to allow a sequence of operations, to take place. A gripper on the read head descends grips the selected record and lifts it into co-operation with the sensing means and returns it to the initial position. Signals are generated at each operation to control the initiation of the following operation.
