Abstract

969,301. Bottling; conveyers. INDUSTRIAL DYNAMICS CO. Ltd. Feb. 1, 1963, No. 4293/63. Headings B8A and B8T. Liquid-filled bottles 11 are carried by a conveyer 13 to a liquid level inspection apparatus 10 which operates an electrically controlled system whereby if the liquid level in a bottle lies outside a predetermined range that bottle is removed from the conveyer to a rotating platform 60 by star-wheels 30, 31. The apparatus includes a light source 83 and two vertically spaced photo-cells 20, 21 which are laterally misaligned with a thin beam of light emitted from a slit 84. A further photo-cell 25 is aligned with the light beam but above it, and prepares a reject operation for each bottle as it enters the inspection zone, and operates a reject operation when the bottle leaves that zone if the photo-cells 20, 21 have not developed a signal indicating that the liquid level is satisfactory. With the liquid at a satisfactory level, and within a range equal to the vertical spacing of the photo-cells 20, 21, the light beam is diffused to illuminate the cell 21 and not the cell 20. If the bottle is too full, both cells are illuminated, and if too low neither cell is illuminated. The star-wheels are mounted on an adjustable platform 29 and are freely rotated by the travel of the bottles on the conveyer 13. A vacuum operated suction disc 41 is associated with each bottle receiving recess, and is operated to grip the bottle if it is unsatisfactorily filled, whereby the bottle is transferred to the platform 60. A vacuum pump 76, Fig. 3, is associated with the discs, and each disc is associated with a valve 72 which is raised by a plunger 77a to produce a suction when a solenoid 77 is energized. As the star-wheels rotate, the bottom of the raised valve engages a cam 38 to lower the valve and cut off the suction at the disc whereby the bottle is released at the rotating platform.
