Abstract

969,176. Forced flow steam boilers. BROWN BOVERI/KRUPP REAKTORBAU G.m.b.H. April 26, 1963 [April 26, 1962], No. 16496/63. Heading F4A. In a supervisory apparatus for detecting and, if desired, initiating the disconnection of a damaged tube system in a forced flow steam boiler comprising a plurality of parallel-connected tube systems, an electrical circuit is associated with each system, each circuit including means for producing a potential proportional to a measured variable, for example, flow rate or pressure, of the associated system and a potential measuring instrument, the circuits being connected in parallel so that a defective system can be located by a fall in the potential reading of the associated instrument relative to the others. Fig. 1 shows the apparatus applied to a generator with four tube systems. Flow rates in the systems which are normally equal are represented by voltages generated by variable sources Q 1 . . . Q 4 . The sources are respectively series-connected with diodes D 1 . . . D 4 , each diode being in parallel with a respective high resistance voltmeter J 1 . . . J 4 . A voltmeter J 5 is connected across the parallelconnected circuits. If a tube in the system associated with circuit 4, for example, becomes defective the potential of source Q 4 increases and since diode D 4 is connected in the direction of flow the reading of instrument J 4 falls whilst those of instruments J 1 . . . J 3 rise to indicate in each case the voltage difference of the sources. The instrument readings thus indicate the location of the defective tube system. The absolute value of the potential in the faulty measuring circuit is indicated at J 5 . In a modification the pressures in the tube systems actuate variable potentiometers to generate the voltage signals and limit switches actuated by these signals initiate optical or acoustic warning signals and, if desired, automatically disconnect the faulty tube system. The invention is of particular application to a steam generator located in the same vessel as a nuclear reactor and heated by the reactor coolant.
