Abstract

1504130 Measuring voltage STRAINSTALL Ltd 16 July 1975 [2 Aug 1974] 34181/74 Heading G1U In providing readings from a plurality of transducers, the output voltage from each is applied to a respective constant current source including a voltage regulator, voltage amplifier and an output current stage whose output current magnitude is proportional to the transducer voltage and which is cut-off instantaneously if the supply voltage thereto is of a particular polarity. The current sources are connected to read-out means, comprising a diode and current meter for each transducer, via at least three inter-connecting conductors, two of which are connected to an alternating voltage supply and the others, which carry the output current from the current sources, are equal in number to onehalf the number of current sources (rounded up to the nearest whole number if the number of current sources is odd. The supply V S is connected to terminals A, B in an amplifier unit over leads of resistance r 1 , r 2 . A voltage regulator VR applies a constant voltage VR to the strain gauge (or temperature or position sensor) bridge T, independent of fluctuations in V S and the values of r 1 , r 2 . The bridge output voltage is converted to a current I o whose value depends solely on the values of v o , Rl, R2 and R3. The current I o flows through a meter M indicating the parameter measured by the bridge T. In the invention, pairs of bridges and amplifier units are connected to the same three leads r 1 , r 2 , r 3 , except the terminals A, B are reversed for the respective units, Fig. 2 (not shown). Thus, while the squarewave supply V 1 makes one terminal (X) positive with respect to the other (Y), one amplifier unit (A 1 ) is energized to provide an indication on a first meter (M1). During the other half-cycle this amplifier (A1) is de-energized since diode D, Fig. 1, is reverse biased. Thus the other meter (M2) indicates the measurement of the second transducer (T 2 ). Further pairs require only the addition of one further conductor i.e. equivalent to r3. Any unpaired amplifier unit also requires one extra conductor.
