A fuel pin assembly comprises a group of parallel fuel pins 12 supported against lateral movement by contact with spacer strips 14 having their widths lying in the lengthwise direction of the fuel pins, each contact between a fuel pin and a spacer strip being substantially line contact. In the embodiment described, the strips 14 are of the shape shown in Fig.3 and are arranged in pairs with the strips of each pair lying on opposite sides of a row of fuel pins 12, the U- shaped lengths 14a being connected together, for example by means of stiffening support members 26, each of which has a number of slots along its length which are spaced to fit over the lengths 14a where these make contact. The lengths 14d of each strip 14 are in contact with the corresponding lengths of one of the strips 14 of an adjacent pair.Tabs 18,30 at the ends of the strips 14 and support members 26, respectively, are passed through slots in sheath plates 22, 22a and are bent over into contact with washers 24, 34, after which the sheath plates 22, 22a are welded together to form a rigid four-sided, open ended sleeve around the fuel pins. Hollow fuel pins both over and through which the coolant flows may be used in place of the solid fuel pins shown.
