Articles 1 arriving in four rows (but which may be spaced at random in the respective rows) are transferred to twin output channels 1c except from those arrival rows in which less than a predetermined minimum of articles have been delivered to an end-stop 8. If less than ten articles in a particular arrival row have backed up against the stop 8, a respective feeler 6 is able to drop and thus prevent action of a vertical pusher 9. In each row in which more than ten articles are present, a respective pusher 9 periodically pushes two articles 1 to 1a from whence they are delivered by pushers 11 to the channels 1c.
