Abstract

The invention comprises benzenesulphonyl semicarbazides of the formula: <FORM:0968805/C1/1> and salts thereof, wherein X is a halogen atom or an alkyl or alkoxy radical (e.g. methyl or methoxy) and R1 and R2 are alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl or cycloalkyl-alkyl radicals or R1 and R2 together with the nitrogen atom form a heterocyclic ring containing 3-8 cyclic carbon atoms, optionally bearing alkyl substituents and optionally containing a further hetero atom (e.g. pyperidine and pyrrolidine); together with processes for their preparation by reacting a benzenesulphonyl compound of the formula: <FORM:0968805/C1/2> with a compound of the formula B-N(R1)R2 wherein W is an amino group or a group convertible to amine by reduction or hydrolysis, one of the residues A and B is an amino group and the other is an isocyanate group or a group which is converted to isocyanate under the reaction conditions, followed if necessary by conversion of W into an amino group. The products are used pharmaceutically as oral anti-diabetic agents.
