Abstract

The invention comprises a composition of matter comprising formaldehyde, an aqueous solvent therefor and 2 to 1,000 parts per million by weight of a polyvinyl alcohol in solution in the aqueous solvent. The invention also comprises a process for stabilizing an aqueous solution of formaldehyde against the irreversible formation of substantial quantities of formaldehyde polymers insoluble therein which comprises providing for the pressure in solution therein of 2 to 1,000 parts per million of a polyvinyl alcohol. Examples are given. Comparative examples describe the use as stabilizers of methyl cellulose and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose. Specification 931,892 is referred to.
