During forcing a tube 1 into the ground 3 a strip or strips of flexible material 4 is or are inserted from the front of the tube between the tube and the earth. The strip, which may be of plastics, paper or metal, is formed into spools housed in a cutter shoe assembly 2 attached to the tube which is of concrete. The tube is forced into the ground by its own weight or by jacking after removing the earth from the inside of the tube. To form a lubricating layer between strip and tube, the strip is impregnated or coated with a lubricant, or lubricant may be injected through openings in the wall of the tube. The tube may form a tunnel or wall.
