[Also in Division H4] In order to determine the position of the image of a distant source of radiant energy, e.g. a star, on the planar photo-cathode 3 of a photo-multiplier 1 comprising a plurality of multiplying electrodes 4 and a collector electrode 5, four mutuallyinsulated coplanar gridlike electrodes 10, 11, 12, 13, Fig. 2, are provided to which modulating signals of different frequencies are applied, the corresponding modulation components in the output signal from the collector electrode 5 being separated by frequency discriminating circuits 8 and applied to a utilization circuit 9 (see Division H4).
