968, 566. Calculating apparatus. SIEMENS & HALSKE A. G. July 13, 1962 [July 13, 1961], No. 27118/62. Heading G4D. Apparatus for adding slug widths in an automatic type-setting machine is arranged so that each slug-width is measured as an integral number of unit widths plus or minus a deviation. The deviations are entered into a counter which affects the total on the main counter when its capacity is exceeded, by a form of transfer. As described slug widths are broken down into multiples of four counting units with negative deviations of 0, 1, 2 or 3 units. When a key T, Fig. 3, is depressed it causes the related pin AS to project. Simultaneously it sends the appropriate deviation signal over leads #ZE, Fig. 5, to a counter (Fig. 4, not shown) operating to the base 4. Differential mechanism comprising racks Z9, Z10, Bar Z11 and pins AS drive pinion Z4 and pointer Z6. When an error of 4 units has developed the counter causes pin ks to project so that the excursion,of the differential mechanism is appropriately reduced.
