Abstract

A photographic medium is formed by vacuum evaporation of one or more of AgCl, AgBr and AgI and condensation of the vapours as a binder free layer of silver halide microcrystals not greater than 3.5 microns in thickness on a solid substrate such as glass, cellulose derivatives, polymers and polyesters or on a bonding substratum such as gelatin a lacquer or a tacky adhesive coated on the solid substrate or on a glass base coated with silicon monoxide. The halides may be mixed together and evaporated simultaneously or they may be separately evaporated and their vapours allowed to mix prior to condensation. The process is carried out in a normal vacuum deposition apparatus comprising an evacuated chamber, filaments of molybdenum, tungsten or tantalum and the substrate is located about 3 1/2 inches from the filaments so that its temperature is 30-50 DEG C. The preferred vacuum is 10-4 to 10-6 mms. Hg. and the coating thickness is 0.3-3.5 microns. Examples are given of coating the following substrates: (1) cellulose acetate coated with a lacquer, (2) polyethylene terephthalate coated with a water permeable colloid layer, (3) Scotch Tape polyester film.
