Abstract

968,179. Jointing by stamping. AMP Inc. July 10, 1963 [July 25, 1962], No. 27351/63. Heading B3Q. Apparatus for crimping electrical connectors simultaneously to the ends of two juxtaposed electrical wires arranged in parallel comprises a pair of juxtaposed spaced connector crimping die sets and a wire separating mechanism in which the wires are separated by relative movement between the wires and a wire separating blade, a pair of spring-loaded members arranged to urge the wires against the blade during relative movement between the blade and wires, the members being moved apart during the movement, to locate each wire end in a connector disposed between the dies of one of the die sets. Mounted on a press ram 1 are, a blade 2, a first crimping die 3 having recesses 4, 5 and a second die 6, a shear blade 7 and a pair of spring-biased axially slidable bolts 8 which co-operate with a pair of slides 22, an anvil 16, strip shear plates 13, 14 and a wire support 17, respectively, mounted on a base. The support 17 is spring- biased and mounted on a pair of adjustable bolts 19 slidable in a frame 20 and contains the pair of slides 22 spring-biased towards each other, each slide having an extension 24 protruding through a slot 25 in a wall 26 perpendicular thereto. In operation the bared ends 35 of an insulated electrical twin wire having an insulation separating cut 37 are placed on the extensions 24 and advanced until the ends thereof actuate a microswitch 11 to initiate a press cycle. As the ram descends the leading connectors of strips being fed simultaneously along guide channels 29 lie on the anvil 16 and the blade 2 parts the wires and forces the slides 22 apart, trapping each wire between one side of the blade and one of the walls 26. Further lowering of the ram causes the bolts 8 to depress the support 17 against springs 18 so that the wire ends enter the ferrule portions of the connectors, the bolts 8 move up against their springs 10 and the ferrule portions 31, 32 are crimped about the insulation and bared core of the wires whilst the slug connecting the strip of connectors is sheared therefrom. During the final stroke of the ram the end of the blade 2 is lubricated by entering an oiled felt pad disposed beneath the extensions 24. In a modification the wires are positioned over a blade 2<SP>1</SP> rigidly mounted on a base and a spring-biased carriage 39 lowered so that the surfaces 45 of a pair of spring-biased members 42 pivoted thereon, engage the wires, the members being forced open by the blade to effect separation of the wires which are subsequently trapped between the surfaces 45 and shoulders 47 adjacent to the blade at which point the wire ends are in their crimping position. Continued lowering of the tool holder 9<SP>1</SP> compresses the springs 41 and effects crimping of the ferrules, as before.
