Abstract

To improve its photo-electric properties zinc oxide is treated with an organo-silicon compound chosen from those conforming to either of two specified general formulae respectively covering unsubstituted or hydrocarbon substituted straight chain or cyclic siloxanes containing up to six silicon atoms, and silane substituted by at least one alkoxyl radical and optionally by various hydrocarbon radicals. Preferred compounds have boiling points of not greater than 200 DEG C. The quantity used preferably lies between 1 and 40% by weight based on the weight of oxide. It is not known whether or not a chemical reaction occurs between the oxide and the silicon compound. Best results are obtained if the oxide is heated to a temperature above the boiling-point of the organo silicon compound and then stirred in contact with the vapour of the latter. In the examples the addition of the silicon compound in its vaporized form takes some hours and stirring is continued for a similar length of time after the addition has been completed. In the examples, the organo-silicon compounds used are hexamethyldisiloxane, octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane, tri-isopropoxysilane, methyltri-ethoxysilane, methyldi-isopropoxy silane, and dimethyl diethoxysilane. Other preferred compounds are listed. The Specification states that the heated oxide may be used in toners for developing electrostatic charge images, in unspecified semi-conductor layers, and in electrophotographic plates. All the examples relate to electrophotographic plates and in these the treated oxide is dispersed in an insulating resinous binder, if desired with the addition of optical sensitizers such as dyestuffs, and is coated on to a relatively conductive support.
