Abstract

Mixtures of monoalkyl and dialkylphosphoric acids, wherein the alkyl groups contain 12 to 22 carbon atoms, have use in the preparation of emulsions of hydrocarbon binding agents (see Division B1). A suitable monoalkyl phosphoric acid is prepared by adding phosphoric acid and phosphoric anhydride in small quantities at a time to a C16/18 fatty alcohol maintained at 80 DEG C. whereby 1 mol of P2O5 and 1 mol of H3PO4 is caused to react with 3 mols of the alcohol. The crude product is dissolved in ethyl alcohol at 60 DEG C.; the solution is cooled to 10 DEG C., and filtered. Ethyl alcohol is distilled from the filtrate whereby the purified mono C16/18 acid-ester is obtained. A suitable dialkylphosphoric acid is obtained by reacting 1 mol of phosphoric anhydride with 4 mols of C16/18 fatty alcohol The crude product is recrystallized from ethyl alcohol.ALSO:An aqueous emulsion of a hydrocarbon binding agent, e.g bitumen or a petroleum resin, is prepared by mixing the binding agent with water in the presence of a mixture of monoalkyl and dialkyl phosphoric acids, the alkyl groups of which preferably contain 12-22 carbon atoms, and such a proportion of an alkali that the emulsion is neutral or moderately alkaline, i.e. pH 6-10. Examples are given which relate to the preparation of suitable emulsions for coating flint (2-10 mm.) and calcites (3-8 mm.). The emulsions can also be used as anti-corrosive paint for sheet metal coatings which have subsequently to be treated with waterproofing coatings, or for tubes that have to be buried after being coated. Paper, cardboard and other fibrous materials are made resistant to moisture and grease by coating the material with an aqueous emulsion of a petroleum resin using the emulsifying agent specified above. The petroleum resins are obtained by distilling tars from the steam-cracking of certain petroleum fractions, or by polymerizing olefins and diolefins. Fibres may be applied to a metal surface using the emulsion as adhesive.
