Abstract

967,902. Alumina catalysts supports. PECHINEY COMPAGNIE DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES ET ELECTROMETALLURGIQUES. Nov. 25, 1960 [Nov. 27, 1959], No. 40659/60. Heading C1A. A catalyst support may be prepared by precipitating an alumina gel at a temperature below 50‹ C. by the neutralization, to a constant pH up to 11 and preferably between 8.5 and 9.5 of an aqueous solution of an alkali metal aluminate or aluminium salt, so that the resulting suspension contains between 40 and 80 grams per litre of alumina (Al 2 O 3 ). The gel is filtered off, washed, dried at about 110‹ C., and activated by heating to 350‹ to 500‹ C. for 1 to 4 hours. The process may be carried out continuously by feeding an aluminate solution and a precipitating solution into the lower part of a precipitation vessel, fitted with a stirring device; the alumina suspension is discharged from the upper part of the vessel. The rates of flow are so regulated that the suspension is discharged after its constituents have been in the precipitation vessel for 10 to 30 minutes. The product so produced is an activated alumina which includes micropores having a diameter of less than 0.1 micron, the volume of which amounts to 35 to 55 c.c. per 100 grams, and macropores having a diameter between 0.1 and 10 microns, the volume of which is 15 to 65 c.c. per 100 grams.
