Abstract

An antifoaming agent is a 1,2,3 polyoxypropylene glycerol of M.W. 1000-5000 or a polyoxypropylene derivative of 1,1,1 trimethylol propane. Its efficacy is increased by the addition of 5-20% of a quaternary ammonium salt containing at least one hydrocarbon chain of not less than 12 C atoms, or of a polyethylene glycol ester of an acid containing not less than 12 C atoms. Suitable quaternary ammonium salts are sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Arquad".ALSO:An antifoaming composition comprises a 1,2,3-polyoxypropylene glycerol of molecular weight 1000-5000, or a polyoxypropylene derivative of 1,1,1-trimethyl propane and 5-20% of a quaternary ammonium salt containing at least one hydrocarbon chain of not less than 12 C atoms, or of a polyglycol ester of an organic acid of not less than 12 C atoms. Suitable quaternary ammonium compounds are sold under the (Registered Trade Mark) "Arquad 2C", "T", or "O". Tables illustrating the effects of various such additives on foaming are given.
