Abstract
967,881. Tubular films. BARMER MASCHINENFABRIK A.G. Aug. 29, 1962, No. 33198/62. Heading B5B. In making tubular films, a mixture in powder form of polyvinyl chloride and more than 20% by weight of plasticizer (calculated on the mixture) is supplied to the entrance of an extruder, consolidated and melted in one or more zones, passed as a melt through an externally heated homogenization zone, deflected from horizontal to vertical direction and extruded as a tube which is then expanded. The homogenization zone comprises a worm, the depth of the recessed portions of which is 3-8% of the outer diameter of the worm, the length of the homogenization zone being at least 10 times the outer diameter of the worm, and at least the length of the entrance zone and consolidation zone together. The melt passing from the homogenization zone may be deflected around a deflector element in the shape of a right-angled rounded isosceles triangle. In one such embodiment (Figs. 1 and 2) a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and plasticizer, after passing through entrance, consolidation and homogenization zones, is deflected from horizontal to vertical in a ring element 1 containing mandrel 4. A recess 7 is formed in the mandrel, so that a triangular deflector element 5 is formed, around which the melt 6 flows. The melt impinging on the recess 7 divides into two streams flowing around the deflector element. The streams unite above the deflector element, and the melt is extruded between mandrel 4 and mouthpiece 2 as a tube. In an example, a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and plasticizer is supplied to a single-worm extruder having compression ratio 1: 4, worm diameter 90 mm. and an effective length of 24 times the diameter. After passing through entrance and consolidation zones, the melt is passed through a homogenization zone of length 12 times the worm diameter and a pitch depth (depth of recessed portions) of 3.2-3.5 mm. The melt is then deflected from horizontal to vertical and extruded through an annular nozzle of 250 mm. diameter.
