Abstract

967,537. Axial-flow compressors; gas turbine plant. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. May 27, 1963, No. 21137/63. Headings FIC and FIG. A compressor casing is formed in at least two sections from synthetic resin material, the sections being connected together by at least one synthetic resin member which overlaps and is bonded to adjacent edges of the sections, and at least one wire is disposed beneath each synthetic resin member so that by pulling the wire or wires, the synthetic resin member or members may be broken to separate the sections of the compressor casing. The term "wire" covers any thin strip of material capable of cutting through the synthetic resin member. In a gas turbine engine 10, Fig. 1, the compressor casing 12 is formed from two substantially semi-cylindrical sections 16, 17 of synthetic resin material. The sections 16, 17 are joined together by strips 22, 23 of synthetic resin material extending over substantially the whole length of the compressor casing and bonded to the sections and extending across gaps 20, 21. The compressor casing 12 is joined to a cylindrical portion 14 of an air inlet casing 11 and to a cylindrical portion 15 of a combustion equipment casing 13 by means of strips 32, 33 of synthetic resin material bonded to the casings and extending around the entire circumference of gaps 30, 31. The portions 14, 15 may be of synthetic resin material to facilitate the bonding. Wires 34, 35, Figs. 1 and 2, and wires 36, 37 are disposed within the gaps 30, 31. Wires 24 and 25 are disposed within the gaps 20, 21 respectively, and lie above the other wires where they cross them. To dismantle the compressor casing 12, wires 24, 25 are pulled to break the strips 22, 23 and then wires 34, 35, 36, 37 are pulled to break the strips 32, 33. The parts of the strips 22, 23, 32, 33 which remain bonded to the casings may be machined away to allow re-assembly of the casings with further strips. Specification 947,795 is referred to.
