Abstract

967,315. Acceleration responsive apparatus. S. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd. July 19, 1963 [Aug. 17, 1962], No. 31592/62. Heading G1K. The apparatus comprises a weight 1 free to move linearly within ball race guides in an outer case 2, a rack 8 rigidly attached to the weight 1 co-operating with a pinion 9 to drive through gear train 12, 13, 15, 16, a light cylinder 10 and silicone oil filling the space between cylinder 10 and a freely rotatable, coaxial, heavy metal cylinder 18 to exert a torque on cylinder 10 proportional to the difference in angular velocity between the cylinders 10, 18. The relative values of the viscous coefficient of the oil and the inertia of the cylinder 18 determine whether the linear displacement of the weight relative to the case 2, caused by accelerating the case 2, give an indication of the displacement or velocity of the apparatus or a combination thereof. Predetermined values are indicated upon contact of terminals 6, 7 on the case 2 touching contact ring 4 or 5 on the weight 1 alternatively the weight may operate microswitches.
