Abstract
Cycloalkenes are prepared by the dehydrogenation of an alicyclic hydrocarbon by contacting the vaporous alicyclic hydrocarbon with a catalyst comprising at least one compound formed from oxygen and at least one metal selected from molybdenum, tungsten, aluminium, iron, cobalt, nickel and the metals of Group Ib, IIb, IVb, Vb and VIIa of the Mendeleef Periodic Table, e.g. the simple oxides and mixtures thereof, zinc manganite, cupric manganite, bismuth molybdate and tin molybdate. The catalyst may contain an oxide of phosphorus, chromium or an alkali metal and may be absorbed on an inert support, e.g. kiesulguhr or silica. The alicyclic hydrocarbon vapour may contain a non-reactant gas, e.g. nitrogen or argon, or air. Temperatures of 50-500 DEG C., contact times of 0.1-5 seconds and pressures of 0.2-5 atmospheres are specified. Examples describe the dehydrogenation of cyclohexane to cyclohexene.
