Abstract

966,419. Measuring moisture content electrically. CONSOLIDATED ELECTRODYNAMICS CORPORATION. May 29, 1962, No. 20603/62. Heading G1N. The moisture content of a gas containing at least one of the gases hydrogen and oxygen is determined by allowing the gas to flow at two different rates past a cell 18 having spaced apart electrodes bridged by a hygroscopic solid electrolyte, applying a D.C. voltage to the electrodes from a source 27, measuring the current flow, in each case, by a recording ammeter 28 and modifying the difference between the two currents by a function of the flow rates. The cell is situated in a loop in parallel with a length of the pipe 10 through which the gas is flowing and, by means of a cock 13, the loop can be made to include one or other of two paths 15, 16, to provide the two rates of flow. The two paths contain pressure-reducing valves 19, 22, set at different values, chambers 20, 23 to remove surges in gas flow, and flow meters 21, 24. A check valve 17 is located upstream of the cell. The flows may be made to be in the ratio 2: 1, when the moisture content may be derived directly from the difference between two rates of flow. Specifications 879,034 and 886, 351 are referred to.
