Abstract

966,103. Arc blow torches. SECRETARY OF STATE, WAR DEPARTMENT. Dec. 30, 1960 [Jan. 4, 1960], No. 204/60. Heading H5H. A constricted arc or plasma jet torch is provided with a plurality of successively energizable solenoids 28 for producing a magnetic field in the arc gap, whereby the are may be constrained simultaneously to spin about the axis of, and to move longitudinally over the surface of, at least one electrode. As shown, an arc is struck between an inner electrode 26, Fig. 1, surrounded by a gas inlet 27, and an elongated nozzle 5a over which the arc is moved circumferentially and longitudinally. Alternatively, an arc may be struck between a workpiece and an internal electrode, over which it is moved longitudinally and circumferentially. Electrode 26 may be replaced by a hollow, cooled, tube formed with a concave end, the are being caused to spin around the rim thereof. In the high-powered torch shown in Fig. 3, the arc is caused to spin around cooled, annular electrodes 46, 47 by solenoids 64, 65, successive energization of which causes additional longitudinal and radial movement of the ends of the arc over the surfaces of the electrodes. The solenoids may be arranged within the electrodes if these are large enough. Gas is fed radially from inlets 62 through the arc, to form a stream of plasma which emerges through Venturi-shaped orifice 39. According to the Provisional Specification, relative movement can be produced between the are and at least one of the electrodes of an arc torch by movement of the electrode. For example, the torch may comprise a rotatable inner electrode, or a nozzle built up of a set of rotatable parts, the axes of rotation being parallel, perpendicular or inclined to the arc path.
