Abstract

Cellulose textiles including fabrics, clothing, webs, threads, ropes and nets made of cotton, jute, flax or hemp are rendered waterproof and/or rotproof by treatment with a water-insoluble phenolate or naphtholate of a metal of Group Ib, IIb, III, IV, VI, VIIa or VIII of the Periodic Table, the compound being nuclearly unsubstituted or substituted by a carboamido group of the formula CONR1R2, where R1 is hydrogen or the same as R2 and R2 is an alkyl or aryl group, the treatment being carried out by applying the phenolate or naphtholate to the textiles from a solution or liquid dispersion containing it, or by forming the phenolate or naphtholate in the presence of the textiles, the amount of the phenolate or naphtholate used being such as will provide 0.05 to 10% by weight thereof in the treated textiles. Thus, the proofing agent may be applied from solution in an organic solvent, e.g. ethanol, or aqueous ammoniacal solution or from a dispersion which may contain a conventional waterproofing agent, e.g. a wax, soap or a protein, or by forming the metal phenolate or naphtholate in situ in the textiles by reacting a water-soluble compound of the metal with a water-soluble salt of the phenolic component. Examples describe the use of (1) copper salicylanilide, (2) lead b -naphtholate, (3) chromium salicylanilide, (4) copper a -naphtholate, and (5) a mixture of the zinc and copper salts of m-hydroxy-benzoic acid anisidides; in the latter two examples the agents are used in an aqueous wax emulsion. Numerous other such agents are named, the metal components thereof including iron and aluminium and the organic components including salicyl diethylamide. Specification 403,411 is referred to.ALSO:Cellulose textiles including fabrics, clothing, webs, threads, ropes and nets made of cotton, jute, flax or hemp are rendered waterproof and/or rot-proof by treatment with a water-insoluble phenolate or naphtholate of a metal of Group IB, IIB, III, IV, VI, VIIA or VIII of the Periodic Table, the compound being nuclearly unsubstituted or substituted by a carboamido group of the formula CONR1R2 where R1 is hydrogen or the same as R2 and R2 is an alkyl or aryl group, the treatment being carried out by applying the phenolate or naphtholate to the textiles from a solution of liquid dispersion containing it, or by forming the phenolate or naphtholate in the presence of the textiles; the amount of the phenolate or naphtholate used being such as will provide 0.05 to 10% by weight thereof in the treated textiles.
