Abstract

965,502. Storing liquefied gases. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. July 22, 1963 [July 24, 1962 (2)], Nos. 28437/62 and 28439/62. Heading F4P. [Also in Division B7] A container for storing and transporting liquefied gas, comprises a rigid outer structure, e.g. the bulkhead 23 of a single or doublehulled ship, and an inner tank 5 formed from liquid-tight panels welded together and having welded thereto brackets 26 supported by beams 20 bolted to the bulkhead 23, the panels being retained in position by spring steel catches 24 engaging lips 27 on the outer ends of the brackets 26. The faces of the beams 20 which abut the outer surface of the inner tank 5 are covered with a pad of resilient fibre glass 25 which is compressed during assembly of the panels to allow the steel catches 24 to engage the lips 27. The inner tank is formed from inner and outer metal sheets 11, 12 separated by, and bonded by an adhesive to the flat crests of a corrugated sheet 13, of metal, or polyester glass fibre reinforced laminate formed with flat sided 60 degree corrugations. The outer face of the sheet 12 has bonded thereto glass wool insulation mats 14 covered by galvanized wire mesh 16. The sides of the corrugations of the sheet 13 may be pierced and a heat-exchange medium may be circulated between the sheets 11, 12.
