Abstract
965,275. Making reinforcing bars; altering physical properties; rolling. J. GILLBERG. June 1, 1961 [June 21, 1960], No. 19857/61. Headings B3A, B3M and B3V. [Also in Division E]. Reinforcing bars for concrete are made by drawing wire 10, by means of rolls 1 and 1a having driving dogs 2, through a rolling apparatus 11 comprising rolls 12-15 which cold form oblique impressions on the wire and thus harden the wire. The dogs 2 also form oblique impressions 01 on the wire, superimposed on the impressions 012a and 014a formed by the rolls 12-15. The rolls 12-15 are freely mounted on shafts 18 and 19 and urged together by a force p<SP>1</SP> due to springs or hydraulic or pneumatic pressure. The forming discs 12a-15a of the rolls are exchangeable and inserted between plates 25. The dogs 2 of the rolls 1 and 1a are mounted in spaced bores in the rolls and formed from hardened steel or cemented carbide. The rolls are displaceable towards and away from each other and also circumferentially relative to one another. A wire of unalloyed low-carbon steel may be cold worked by the rolling to increase the initial yield limit from 28 to more than 42 kg./ mm.' the elongation then being about 8%.
