Abstract

965,183. Drying non-rigid elastomers. INTERNATIONAL BASIC ECONOMY CORPORATION. Jan. 26, 1962 [Feb. 17, 1961], No. 2972/62. Heading F4G. [Also in Division B1] In apparatus for drying non-rigid elastomeric material, the material passes through an elongated enclosure with gradually increasing pressure and temperature until a sudden escape of the material from the zone of highest pressure in the enclosure to one of reduced temperature and pressure outside induces instantaneous flash evaporation of moisture in the material and cooling thereof. In a process for preliminary dewatering and drying natural, synthetic and reclaimed rubbers, the material in slurry form passes from a belt 20, Fig. 1, through a preliminary extrusion drier 22 to reduce the water content to between 5 and 20% by weight, and then passes to a drying unit 23, Fig. 6A, in which the material is increasingly compressed by a shaft with compression worms 69, 70, 71 &c. and inwardly extending breaker bolts 77 and heated by a steam heated jacket (not shown). The material is thus compressed and heated until it passes through discharge openings 80 in a removable insert 82, in a dieplate 79, the sudden drop in pressure and temperature inducing flash evaporation of water from the material and also a cooling of the material. A thermocouple (not shown) is inserted in the die plate 79 to sense the temperature of the elastomer and is utilized to control steam admission to the jacket in accordance with the requirements and cutter means (not shown) adjacent the exit reduce the issuing material to limited size. Steam or other vapour or gas under pressure may be introduced into the imperforate barrel of the unit 23 through a valve 90, to increase the total heat input into the material or increase the porosity of the elastomer. The extrusion press drier 22 comprises barrel bars 30, Fig. 3, held by split-ring retainers 31 and clamped by bolts 32 leaving slight spaces therebetween for the escape of liquid forced out by the action of screw flights on a shaft 35 and knife bar tips 34a projecting therebetween. The discharge end has an adjustable cone choke which can be advanced or retracted along the shaft to adjust the escape area between the cone and barrel which respectively carry movable and fixed cutter elements to co-operate in intermittent cutting engagement during rotation of the shaft.
