Abstract
A method of producing a composite body comprising thermoplast-bonded stranded material comprises coating continuous length fibres, e.g. rayon or glass fibres, with the thermoplast whilst it is in the fluid or dispersed state, gathering the fibres into a continuous strand before the thermoplast has set, and subsequently bonding a further quantity of the same thermoplast to the stranded material to form the body. The stranded material may be woven into a mesh or formed into a mat prior to the bonding step, and the bonded mesh may be shaped by a compression or injection moulding process at a temperature above the melting point of the thermoplast. Thermoplasts mentioned are polyamides, saturated polyesters and olefinic polymers. The fibres may be coated by molten thermoplast, by gaseous or liquid dispersions or solutions of the thermoplast, or by a fluidised bed method in which the fibres are heated prior to coating to a temperature 100 DEG to 200 DEG C. higher than the melting point of the thermoplast.
