Abstract

Block copolycarbonates contain (a) blocks of recurring units having the formula: <FORM:0965085/C3/1> in which W, X, Y and Z are hydrogen, chlorine, fluorine or methyl and R1 and R2 are hydrogen, C1-C6 alkyl (which may be chlorinated or fluorinated) or phenyl (which may be chlorinated or fluorinated) and (b) recurring units of formula: <FORM:0965085/C3/2> derived from a compound of formula: HO-R-OH in which R has a molecular weight of 100-10,000 and may be a linear polyalkylene ether, polymethylene, polyester, polyurethane or polystyrene residue. The copolycarbonates are made by first reacting an appropriate bis-phenol with phosgene to form a polycarbonate having recurring units A, then reacting the compound of formula HO-R-OH with phosgene to form its bis-chloroformate, and then copolymerizing the polycarbonate and the bis-chloroformate. Examples disclose reacting the polycarbonate of 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane with the bischloroformate of (1) and (2) polyethylene glycol (M.W. 200 or 1,050); (3) polytetrahydrofuran glycol (M.W. 3,000); (4) poly(ethylene adipate) (M.W. 2,000); (5) dihydroxylated polystyrene (M.W. 8,000). The copolycarbonates are soluble in benzene, methylene chloride and chloroform and are useful in the manufacture of photographic film bases (see Division G2), fibres, adhesive film bases, dielectrics and objects for use under hot conditions. Dihydroxylated polystyrene is made by polymerizing styrene in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and methanol, dissolving the polymer in dioxane containing potassium hydroxide dissolved in methanol, and then heating the solution. Specifications 808,485 and 912,203 are referred to.
