964,840. Reactors. COMMUNAUTE EUROPEENNE DE L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE, EURATOM. Sept. 3, 1962 [Sept. 4, 1961], No. 33756/62. Heading G6C. A device for varying the lattice of fuel and reflector elements in a nuclear reactor comprises two sets of guide bars disposed at rightangles to each other in two superposed planes, said bars each comprising two parallel portions having a space therebetween, and including fuel or reflector element supporting carriages slidably supported by one of the sets and engaged into the spaces of the other set. Each set of bars is linked by lazy tongs through pivots 10. The two bars 10 which cross at the centre of the lattice are in fixed positions,the lattice spacing being varied by moving the bars on either side of the fixed position bars towards or away from the centre. Bar movement is effected by motors 30, 31 rotating four leadscrews (only two shown) 26, 27 which expand and contract the lazy tongs through levers 24 which are restrained against rotation by a guide bar 36. The upper set of bars is supported by rollers mounted on their ends, which run on channel section beams 8. The lower set of bars is similarly supported on an I-section beam 9. The element support carriages are located by both bars forming a given lattice space but their weight and the weight of the elements mounted thereon is taken solely by the lower set of bars. They are spaced from the surrounding locating faces of the bars by spring plungers mounted on the carriages. The reactor core area is indicated by the line 5, and the bars beyond this area, including those that do not cross-bars of the other set, are for supporting reflector elements.
