Abstract

[Also in Division F1] The mass rate of flow of a liquid in a-conduit is determined by creating a controlled swirl in the liquid to produce a force on a static sensing member, which is balanced by a centrifugal force whose speed of rotation determines the swirl velocity, and is therefore proportional to the mass rate of flow. As shown, liquid flowing in a duct 1 is deflected by vanes G to create a swirl producing a torque on the axial blades of a rotor R1 which is opposed by a centrifugal force produced by weights 8 on arms 7 rotated by a motor 5, acting through link 10, pad 11 and rod 12 on the rotor spindle. The speed of motor 5 is determined by a differential transformer 16 whose armature 15 is attached to the arms 7. To ensure direct proportionality between the torque on rotor R1, or the speed of motor 5, and the mass rate of liquid flow, the swirl velocity is sensed by a rotor R2 having a number of equispaced magnetic strips 4a on its periphery, producing a pulse train at 4 whose frequency is proportional to the swirl velocity, and is compared at 23 with a pulse frequency difference being used to energize a motor 24 to adjust the angle of the vanes G.
