Abstract
964,385. Spinning apparatus. MONSANTO CHEMICAL CO. Oct. 9, 1962 [Oct. 26, 1961], No. 38228/62. Heading B5B. The denier of spun filaments 14 is monitored by a system for detecting one or more filaments travelling in a path and comprises a light source 26 positioned on one side of said path, a light responsive element 27 positioned on another side of said path opposite the light source to receive light from the source, means for applying a voltage to the element 27, a capacitor 32 connected between a junction 34 and one side of the element 27, a resistor 33 connected between the junction 34 and the other side of the element 27, a semi-conductor element 36 connected to the junction 34, means 38 connected to the semi-conductor element for indicating the presence of a filament in the said path and a power supply connected across the semiconductor element and the indicating means. In the embodiment shown, molt-spun filaments 14 emerging from a spinning head 11 pass down a chimney 12 across which air from a manifold 17 is directed so as to cool and solidify the filaments 14 which then pass between guide pins 19 and are taken up at constant speed. If the pressure at the spinnerette holes (not shown) is correct, the filaments will be of the correct denier and will be spun at a speed high enough to allow an amount of slack which is deflected by the air stream as shown, but if the spinnerette pressure drops the filaments will pass the spinnerette at a slower rate, thus causing the take-up mechanism to pull the filaments on to a straight path and into alignment with a light beam produced by the source 26 shining through a pair of apertures 22, 23 in the wall of the chimney 12 on to a cadmium sulphide cell 27. In the event of a decrease in filament denier the light reaching the cell 27 is partially obstructed causing the resistance of the cell 27 to increase, thus increasing the charge on the capacitor 32 which in turn causes a triggering voltage to appear across the resistor 33. This voltage triggers a silicon controlled rectifier which then allows a neon indicating lamp 38 to light up to give warning of a decrease in filament denier. The system may be reset by opening a switch 37. The capacitor 32 charging through the resistor 33 provides a time delay to prevent undesirable triggering of the rectifier 36 because of fluctuations in light from the source or transient fluctuations in the resistance of the cell 27.
