Abstract
964,310. Rectilinear bearings. J. B. THOMSON. March 1, 1963 [June 25, 1962], No. 8370/63. Heading F2A. A rectilinear bearing disposed between a load carrying member 12, Fig. 1, and a base element 14 consists of a bearing chain 15 made up of concave rollers 16, Fig. 2, connected by links 34, Fig. 1, e.g. nylon or rubber. The chain travels round a race 22 of cylindrical centre-section and spheroidal end-sections; the radius of curvature of the rollers 16 being equal to or less than that of the race 22. The race 22, Fig. 2, is secured to the member 12 by arms 38, 40 and an eccentric pin 50 whereby the race is adjusted relative to the member 12. Each arm 38, 40 is slotted 56, a bolt 53 across each slot enabling the pin 50 to be closed frictionally gripped. The load is transferred from the chain to the base element 14 through a support shaft 64 along which the chain moves, the shaft being of circular section and having a radius of curvature equal to that of the race; the shaft 64 is bolted to the element 14 and may be laterally adjusted with respect thereto. The race, which may be inverted to take account of wear, has a limited angle of movement about the pin 50, and the chain may run at an angle to the race centre-line. In a modification, the arms are replaced by depending parts 13, Fig. 8, which are integral with the member 12 whilst the support shaft is located in a ledge 92 in the element 14 or a groove in the base of the latter. The chain may include resilient links or rollers or a spring to provide for repair, length variations and to eliminate snatching.
