Abstract

Latex based paints and alkyd resin paints contain as microbicidal preservative a halophenol or a water-soluble salt thereof- and a polyalkylene imine. In an example aqueous iso-propyl-alcoholic mixtures of pentachlorophenol and polyethyleneimine are added to a latex based paint comprising titanium dioxide, clay, calcium carbonate, diatomaceous earth, potassium tripolyphosphate, water and a copolymer of styrene and butadiene.ALSO:Oil-based paint compositions contain as preservative a halophenol or a water-soluble salt thereof and a polyalkyleneimine. In an example, the oil-based paint comprises iron oxide pigment, silica asbestine, spar varnish, linseed oil, mineral spirits, water and cobalt, lead and manganese driers and the preservative comprises 2,3,4,6-tetrachloro phenol polyethyleneimine and propylene glycol monomethyl ether.ALSO:A preservative composition having microbiocidal action contains as active ingredient a halophenol or a water-soluble salt thereof especially those of formula <FORM:0964186/A5-A6/1> where R is H, methyl, phenyl, chlorine or bromine, each X is at least one of bromine or chlorine and n is an integer from 1 to 4 and a polyalkyleneimine preferably of mol. wt. above 300. Specified water-soluble salts of the phenols are the alkali metal, ammonium, ethanolamine, methylamine, ethylamine, trimethylamine, propylamine and triethanolamine salts. Polyalkylene imines are preferred having viscosities in 25 aqueous solution of 3-4 centipoises at 25 DEG C. Polyalkyleneimines prepared by heating 2-oxazolidone or N-substituted oxazolidones may be used. The compositions are preferably prepared in a solvent, e.g. glycolethers, alcohols or ketones or mixtures thereof with hydrocarbons. These compositions may be used to treat cellulosic materials, e.g. wood.
