Abstract

A composition for application to the skin comprises a water-soluble alginate, with or without an emulsion of a rubber-like latex, together with a water-soluble salt of a p multi-valent metal and a suitable filler. When applied to the skin, which may be done from a pressurized aerosol container, the composition forms a flexible layer which is in intimate contact with the skin and which may be peeled off after the treatment. Suitable substances for forming the emulsion include natural latices and polymers of butadiene, styrene, neoprene and chloroprene and suitable alginates are potassium, sodium or ammonium alginate and triethanolamine alginate. The metal salts, which form the basic treatment medium, may be, for example, calcium sulphate or lead monosilicate and suitable fillers include calcium carbonate, kaolin and powdered asbestos.
