Abstract

In a process for producing low-hydrogen steel in an electric furnace, finely divided lime for slag-forming is charged pneumatically into the furnace, the lime having been protected from moisture since its production. The lime is of a particle size less than 100m ; each addition should comprise not more than 20 mgm./sq. metre of bath surface, the proportion of carrier gas to lime being suitably 3-6 litres per mgm. Supply velocity should not exceed 100-200 mgm. lime per minute.
