Abstract

964,041. Jointing by stamping. BURNDY CORPORATION. Jan. 8, 1962 [Jan. 10, 1961], No. 625/62. Heading B3Q. [Also in Division B5] A system for compressing an article, such as a terminal on to an energized electrical conductor, comprises an hydraulic power source 401 connected by two independent circuits which are isolated from each other and connected in series to an hydraulically-operated compression tool 101. The tool has jaws 103, 105 and is mounted on one end of a rigid tube 203 of fibre glass, the other end of which is received in a separator 210 having a disc 251 slidable in a housing 205, 207, the disc at one side being exposed to a fluid, such as transformer oil, in the tube 203 and at the other side being exposed to the fluid, such as hydraulic oil, in a flexible tube 107 connected to a pump 401. The disc 215 is formed as a piston having seals 231, 233 and is urged by a spring 221 towards the flexible tube. An electrical control circuit, which can be set to semi-automatic or manual operation, together with a valve arrangement 501 control the system so that on a first operation of a switch controlled by an air bulb 109, the pump is started and fluid at a pressure determined by a low-pressure relief valve 425 is passed from a connection 411 leading from the pump to a connection 415 joined to the flexible tube so that the jaws 103, 105 grip the terminal. Upon a second operation of the switch, a solenoid 520 is operated to retract a rod 419 against a spring 417 so that a ball valve 421 can close and prevent flow to the low-pressure relief valve, the pressure in the tubes then being limited by a maximum pressure relief valve 429. The maximum pressure is sufficient to effect crimping of the terminal on to the conductor and when it is reached, the valve 429 lifts to allow a flow of oil through a passage 435 to operate a switch and stop the pump, the jaws then retracting from the terminal. In an alternative embodiment, a second fibre-glass tube surrounds the first 203 and the space between the tubes is filled with loose fibre glass. Specification 964,042 is referred to.
