963,488. Photo-electric measurement of transmissivity. HAGAN CONTROLS Ltd. Dec. 22, 1960 [Dec. 23, 1959], No.44048/60. Heading G1A. Apparatus for measuring the transmissivity of a fluid comprises a lamp shining through a sample on to a first photosensitive device and through polarisers on to a second photosensitive device and means responsive to the outputs of said devices to adjust the polarisers relatively to equalise the outputs. Boiler water is tested for phosphate (PO4) by passing it through a chamber 19 and adding a reagent which colours the water blue to a shade dependent upon the PO4 content at a rate proportional to the rate of flow. Light from a lamp 26 passes through chamber 19 to a photomultiplier PC2 and through polarisers 31, 30 to a photomultiplier PC1. The outputs of photomultipliers PC1 and PC2 are applied to the grids of triodes 40, 41 and any difference between the voltages E1 and E2 is made alternating by a vibrator 60 and energizes a motor 33 which adjusts the angle of polariser 31. The PO4 concentration is indicated on a meter 72 energized from a potentiometer 71 coupled to motor 31. Motor 31 may control the PO4 feed.
