Abstract

963,425. Sawing. E. A. HAYDEN. June 5, 1961, No. 39266/63. Divided out of 959,323. Heading B5L. A portable log saw assembly comprises a carriage 14 to extend across a reclining log 2, Fig. 7, and having guide means 34, 36, 38 to bear upon the log, the carriage being adapted to mount a chain saw 26 in a plane below the guide means, and a roller 104 having a downwardly-tapered portion and extending below the said plane for engagement with the log during a sawing operation. The carriage has end brackets 16, 18 secured together by a tie-bar 74 and provided with lugs 66, 68, Fig. 2, which are internally threaded to receive screws 62, 64 engaging projections 54, 56 on cross-bars 30, 32. The screws are rotatable by hand wheels 70, 72 to raise and lower the bars which carry shafts rotatably supporting the guide means which consist of rollers 34, 36, 38. The end brackets have feet 76 secured by bolts to a guide bar 20 for the chain saw 26, the bar extending beyond the ends of the carriage to provide a support for the driving means S for the saw and a handle 78. The bolts securing the bracket 16 to the bar also secure a bracket 79 to the other side of the bar, the bracket, at one end, supporting a shaft carrying a tapered roller 102 and a roller 86 extending above the rollers 34, 36, 38, and, at the other end, adjustably supporting a member 88 which carries at its end the tapered roller 104 and a roller 100 also extending above the rollers 34, 36, 38. In operation, in order to provide a flat surface on the log, a board P is secured to the log by nails 120 and wedges 116 and the rollers 34, 36, 38 run along the board so that the saw produces a flat surface on the log. Thereafter the rollers can engage the log as it is cut into boards of a thickness determined by the distance between the saw and rollers as set by the hand wheels 20. The tapered rollers 102, 104 engage the side of the log and the angle which the saw makes with the log is determined by the adjustment between the member 88 and bracket 29; the angle determines the amount of self-feeding of the saw into the log. The rollers 86, 100 prevent the end bracket 16 engaging the log when the cut is beyond the greatest chamber of the log. Convex or concave surfaces may be cut by adjusting the nuts holding the shafts 42 carrying the rollers on the bars 30, 32 so as to bend the saw bar 29 and the tie-rod 74.
