Apparatus for cutting holes in thin flexible webs comprises a bearing structure 17, 18, Fig. 4, a tubular rotatable cutting-tool 27 journalled at 25, 26 in said bearing structure and terminating in an outwardly-directed circular cutting edge 29, a resilient peg 59 having a non-skid surface lying substantially at right angles to the axis of the cutting-tool and normally spaced therefrom to receive a web 61 between it and the cutter, power means adapted to rotate the cutting tool about its axis and means for bringing the peg and cutting edge relatively together to cut a hole in the web. A number of cutters 27 are mounted in line in the structure 17, 18 and the pegs are similarly disposed in line above them in a vertically movable elongated member 55. Each cutter 27 has an interchangeable cutting head 28 having an edge 29, below the tubular portion 30 of which is a notch 31 to radially eject cut discs, and an axial shank terminating in a bifurcated end having abutment portions 34 so that they may be inserted into the hollow open-ended shaft 35 to which a gear 39 is rigidly secured. The gear 39 intermeshes with corresponding gears attached to the neighbouring tools, one tool being driven directly by a motor which includes a sprocket and chain driving a further tool to distribute the driving force among the cutters. In operation, the web is advanced intermittently and when it is at rest a cam and roller 73, 74, Fig. 3, actuates bars 67, by movement of the pivot arms 65, 69 to depress the elongated member 55 and pegs 59, against the action of compression springs, to contact the web, the cam disc 73 being mounted on a short shaft 71 having a sprocket 72 on its other end driven by a chain 75. As the pegs are depressed they also depress, against the action of springs, a stripper-bar 52, which is disposed above the line of cutters and has holes corresponding to the latter; the cutters then contact and cut the web. The pegs, which are removably mounted in the member 55 to facilitate cutting of different numbers of holes, are made of resilient material such as wood, rubber, or synthetic resin which is arranged to have the necessary non-skid surface contact with the web.
