Abstract

[Also in Divisions E2 and F2] Flexible plastic stripping for assembly into tubular form with a fluid-tight separable longitudinal seam is manufactured by extruding a strip 12 of hot plastic material having a width and thickness in excess of that desired for the finished product and with complementary shaped tongues and grooves 36 along its lateral edges and an integral narrow strip 39 attached to one edge (Fig. 2). The strip is then fed into a cooling region, usually a water bath maintained at a predetermined low temperature. Tension is applied longitudinally of the strip at a remote previously cooled section of the strip to feed the strip forwardly at a uniform rate slightly in excess of the rate of its extrusion and so draw it down to the desired width and thickness. The assembled tube is shown in Fig. 4. U.S.A. Specification 2,613,421 is referred to.
